Hours left to book Marriott / SPG before rates go up

A quick reminder that Marriott and Starwood’s category changes go into effect at midnight hotel time tonight.  Some parts of the world have already passed midnight and are into March 7th. As such, hotels in those time zones should have switched categories (or will shortly). Recently, I reviewed the Protea Hotel Stellenbosch Dorpshuis & Spa outside of Capetown, South Africa (pictured above).  That hotels is moving from Category 1 (7,500 points per night) to…

Which card earns the most United miles per dollar? A surprising answer…

United Miles Per Dollar

In a recent post I considered whether it was foolish to use hotel cards for everyday spend.  I concluded that using the SPG card for everyday spend makes sense for many people.  Most other hotel cards only make sense under specific conditions. In response, a reader asked if he should put everyday spend on his SPG card or his Sapphire Reserve.  I said SPG.  Even though the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card earns 3X for travel…

Protea Hotel Kruger Gate – a Marriott Rewards Sweet Spot

Long before discovering points and miles as a method to travel, my wife and I had a shared dream trip: a safari. I think it’s the child within — the chance to see lions and leopards and elephants in their natural habitats rekindles the amazement of seeing them on TV for the first time as kids. It’s hard to describe the difference between watching Animal Planet and finding those scenes play out in real life…

The 150,000 point offer everyone should avoid

Last fall, Marriott began advertising a so-called 150,000 point offer for their Marriott Rewards Premier credit card.  The offer was so clearly inferior to the public 80K offer that I never even wrote about it.  To my surprise, I learned recently that Chase and Marriott are still trying to sucker people in with this offer… False Advertising? First I want to point out that this ad is terribly misleading.  It clearly says that you can…

South African Wine Country on Marriott points: Protea Hotel Stellenbosch Dorpshuis & Spa

As Greg pointed out when introducing me, I am currently on a round-the-world trip — after all, we collect these miles and points with the intent to use them. I think Greg hit the nail on the head when he said that hoarding and cherry picking is the way to go.  I hoard various currencies and then look to maximize the value of my points through strategic redemption. I started this trip in South Africa, where I…

British Airways Avios 35% bonus when transferring hotel points

British Airways is offering a 35% bonus when converting hotel points in British Airways Avios. While this works with points from a number of hotel programs, the two with which it would likely be most attractive are: Starpoints: You always receive a 5,000 point bonus when converting 20,000 Starpoints to Avois and these promotion stacks on top of that. This is to say that 20,000 Starpoints become 33,750 British Airways Avios. These points would be…

Who is eligible for Marriott’s Elite Status Buy Back?

One of the things I love about Marriott’s elite status program is that once you get status it is incredibly easy to keep it.  Each year they offer their Elite Status Buy Back program.  If you didn’t earn enough elite nights during the previous year to keep your current level of status, you can exchange points to keep that status.  Years ago I completed a Taste of Platinum Challenge in order to earn Marriott Platinum…

Should you use Marriott points to get a Southwest Companion Pass? Introducing the Marriott Travel Package MakeUpYourMinder.

Marriott Travel Package MakeUpYourMinder

Last week I described how I used my Marriott Rewards points to secure a Southwest Companion Pass.  The trick, which will only work through March of this year, is to exchange 270,000 Marriott Rewards points for a Marriott Travel Package consisting of a 7 Night Category 1-5 Certificate and 120,000 Southwest points.  Those Southwest points currently qualify towards the 110,000 points needed for a Companion Pass.  After March 31st, points transferred from hotel programs, like…
