[Dead] 5x restaurants with Chase Sapphire Reserve?

Update 7/7/20: Doctor of Credit reports that this died sometime in the past couple of days, so it was apparently not intended. It’s anybody’s guess as to whether or not Chase will therefore claw back the points.

As reported by Doctor of Credit based on data points from reddit, the Chase Sapphire Reserve is unofficially coding restaurants at 5x, possibly in conjunction with the gas station temporary 5x bonus category that began on July 1st and runs through September 30th.

At this point, it isn’t totally clear whether restaurant spend is counting toward the $1500 cap on that 5x bonus category (remember that the temporary gas station bonus is good on up to $1500 in purchases from July 1st through September 30th) or whether this is an additional bonus category (update: a reader reported getting 5x on more than $1500 in restaurant spend).

Whether it shares the gas station cap or not, this is a great deal for Sapphire Reserve cardholders. Keep in mind that restaurant purchases will also trigger the travel credit on the CSR if you have not used up your annual $300 travel credit thanks to Chase’s temporary COVID credit card enhancements Update: Nevermind that. As you’ll see in our master post, you can use the credit toward grocery and gas station purchases.. The good news for Greg is that he won’t need to switch up his wallet again to accommodate this one, though it may change which card he uses at restaurants once he uses up his Bonvoy Brilliant credits.
