I know it feels like we’ve been isolating for 3 months, but I don’t think that tomorrow is July 2!

My question is: what’s the best way to piece together a ANA business class around the world flight? Is it using united to find flights for each segment?

I want to thank you and commend you for offering what is probably the best, most active and informative blog and a very enjoyable podcast. The format you have and the exchange of ideas is what it is all about. I don’t know how much of it is scripted, but it comes across as you both having bullet points to discuss, and the rest happens naturally. Just great both of you Greg and Nick, really.
For this episode, since you offer, I would love to hear some details on options of liquidating gift cards from home (not already mentioned in the blog, and that do not involve paying taxes…).
Also, last week you said the Citi Premier was definitely one card to apply for now as the bonus would likely go away. You didn’t discuss too much airline cards, but you said that higher offers would be ok to apply for. The Aviator Red Business (I just got the personal last month) has the 75k offer, but seems to reoccur periodically, so while elevated as an offer, it maybe not be the last time we will see it. (FYI I live in AA hub)
Lastly, if you had to chose between the Venture card at 60k SUB and the Citi Premier -and/or or Aviator Red Business (very low hanging fruit ay $1000 spend requirement) – which one (or 2 cards) would you choose (Or a straight cash back card)? I was close to pulling the trigger on Delta Gold business card for sky team, but got cold feet…and we will see high delta signups again and soon I believe. We cannot go out of the house and spending a lot right now is not advisable…so need to cherry pick cards.
I want to wish you the greatest success in these coming months. I know I read your blog on an hourly basis and can’t wait to hear your podcast every week.

Hi Gregg and Nick, do you think the United biz explorer 100k offer will ever return? Today being the last day to sign up. You think it’s worth another chase app?

Also with chase and Amex increasing their AF for cards with lounge access, The United club card seems to be the new sleeper hit card. The ability to access both United and Star Alliance biz lounges seems to be a great alternative to chase and Amex. Thoughts?

Love the show!

Nick,
My wife is pregnant and due in another month. Which airlines have the best lap seat policies and what corresponding cards should we consider signing up for now that we are both under 5/24?

You and Greg are the best. Thank you for all that you do. Hang in there as this too shall pass!

A couple questions, if I may.
My Chase Sapphire Reserve annual fee will come due in October. Unless international travel opportunities return that soon, there may no longer be good justification for paying that hefty fee. Unless…..Chase sweetens the pot. When you talk about asking for a retention offer, what is an example of a really good (and realistic) offer a person such as I might be granted, if brave enough to ask?
Also, I’m having trouble trying to guess whether both cash and award travel will be cheaper (due to trying to encourage more people to travel again) or more costly (due to airlines trying to recoup recent losses), once we can fly internationally again. I respect your opinions. What do you think? Many thanks!

I feel like transferable currencies will at least mostly survive this with value. Are there are airline programs you would be willing to take suboptimal non travel redemptions on to hedge against them evaporating? Take the question however you’d like but I’m specifically a little worried about having a small, but meaningful stash of Lifemiles.

Hey Guys,

Miss the Ann Arbor meetups. My honeymoon to the Maldives is in Late August. So far, all my flights are still intact (EY Apartments, Qsuites) – but that could obviously change. If either of you were planning a honeymoon in Late August right now, what would you do/what would you recommend I do? For us, flying is half the fun of traveling, so if something were to happen to our flights, that would really put a damper on our trip. We’ve never done anything like this before, so we want to go 110% on this.

Thanks guys!

Thoughts or strategies for AS miles before they join OW? Sitting on 400k (mostly earned from travel certs). I see main benefit of waiting is AS may *hopefully* allow 2 partners on a reservation (AA: DTW-ORD and JL:ORD-HND). That would eliminate the need to do positioning flights. But who knows if or when that might happen? Main concern for waiting is likely devaluation and AS losing partners. What might a devaluation look like? Thoughts on AS losing EK and LA as partners? What plans do you have more any AS miles you currently have? Thanks Greg and Nick!

Wondering about award redemption options to Easter Island. My family of 6 has been planning to go to Easter Island for a few years, but never made the trip. LATAM is the only airline that services IPC (Hanga Roa) but I have no easy way to collect their miles other than transferring Marriott points. Now British Airways Avios (our original plan) is no longer an option since LATAM left the alliance. Do you think by early 2021 when the travel restrictions are gone that having a large chunk of Skymiles will be useful? Or is Delta and LATAM’s partnership unlikely to go far enough to make it worth building up a stash now? I’ve got piles of Ultimate Rewards, but I don’t think they will be helpful other than maybe to get a hotel there. I also have plenty of United Mileageplus miles to get the family roundtrip to either Santiago or Tahiti (the only two airports I know of that have connections to IPC), it’s just finding a way to get from one of those out to the island. Oh, and we are very much an economy class type of family, so award availability is less of a concern than finding the right currency to collect.

Please do a in-depth post on using points for partner award bookings. I love your talks and posts but when it comes to partner awarding the discussions are as though most of us know how to use our miles this way or we all are in the points game using our miles for international flights. I would say the majority of us in the hobby don’t do a lot of international travel (though we might like to start), and I have a hard time figuring out the best ways to use my Ultimate rewards points & AA miles doing partner bookings to save points. I know today’s you tube isn’t for this but I would appreciate something in depth on how to do this.

Thanks,

Love the site and love your podcast ever since I found you guys. I especially like how you will take both sides of an argument to look at the pros and cons and go into the nitty gritty! Will this be recorded and shared later on via Podcast?
If you could talk about a couple of questions below:

What’s the risks of transferring and booking partner awards through smaller airlines that may not make it though the current times? For example, transferring MR to Virgin Atlantic to book an ANA flight for 2021. Is it safer to just transfer to ANA directly and pay the points premium for the piece of mind that they’ll still be around next year?

Since now is the time to reset CC strategies, assuming no MS, how many point types is too many? For example, if I’m trying to maximize point earnings through various cards and are collecting Hyatt, MR, UR, ThankYou and Alaska points, not all programs are overlap, so it may take me much longer to accumulate enough points for a viable reward redemption. UR is pretty good with 1-1.5 cent travel booking but most of the value for Amex, CapitalOne and CITI comes from transferring to partners for premium cabin bookings. Since they don’t always have overlapping partners, 25k points spread over MR, TY and Alaska is not as good as focusing 60k points in one of them.

With the constant issues and devaluatioins at Marriott and potential cash promos when travel is safe again, is the best use of Marriott points actually transferring to airline partners like Alaska for premium cabin redemption?

If there is a card we really want and would apply for anyways, does it make sense to still apply or wait. For example, BoA’s Alaska Card’s current 40k + $100 credit promo. Get it now or wait and see what comes down the line?

Thanks

How many bank bonuses can you do in a years time before they will start denying you? Since I keep around $100,000 of my wife’s & my 401k’s in a stable account (not paying much now, but secure) The rest in stock mutual funds. I am considering pulling the $100,000 with the new tax law & using it to start opening checking & savings accounts for myself & wife. This way we can start getting some of the bonuses since we don’t have an extra $100,000 laying around to get some of the better bonuses without having to do direct deposits. Then put the money back in at the end of the three year period to keep from paying taxes.

Guys, I have been an avid follower of your blog for several years. Apologies for it taking a global pandemic to motivate me to comment, and simply relay that you guys are the best! (My wife still talks about our business class trip to Europe we took using points for airfare and hotels thanks to everything I learned from you guys.)
My question for Thursday:
I will be retiring in two years, at which point my plan is to focus more on cash back rather than points. In the interim, I plan to do a full court press to amass as many points as possible to parlay into an awesome vacation when I do retire. In your opinion, which transferable currency would provide the most “bang for my buck”, and then be easiest to product change to focus on cash back after I retire?
Right now I have been amassing Amex MR points primarily because of the ease of getting additional cards and subsequent bonuses, but would love your perspective.
Lastly, Greg, hats off to you for understanding how to responsibly run a business and looking out for your team during this crisis.
Thanks!

Given both your talents for accurately predicting things: now that airlines and hotels are done giving away free status for 2021, what’s next? Are they done shoring up their loyalty programs or will we see even more promotions. Extra points for calling out a specific company and going off the beaten path (Double night credit, cheaper fares, etc.).

My prediction is that last year Hyatt had a 10% back on points redemption as well as $250 off all inclusive resorts if you had their CC or status. I think they will do something similar again and scale it to your status level. Ie. 5% for discoveries, 10% for explorists and 15% off for globalists on point bookings.

I think Alaska will come up with something creative as well (Remember %fare discount to Hawaii based on wave size). Maybe they’ll take a page out of hotel loyalty programs and do extra 500 miles after 2 RT flights and extra 1000 miles after 4.

As a long-term holder of the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Ritz-Carlton cards, is there an exit strategy if you’re turned off by the $550 Sapphire Reserve annual fee and the constant Marriott devaluations leave a bad taste in your mouth? I value spend 75K for Platinum, food with Priority Pass (i.e. not Amex). Only other premium card held is Hilton Aspire.

Hi. Enjoying your shows and podcasts. My question is about whether to renew my Chase United Explorer card. I got it mostly to get access to additional award seats when booking, but I also use the lounge passes. Since I am now Premier Silver due to Marriott status, I think I get the same access to awards seats as the cardholders, which reduces the incentive to renew the card. Any thoughts?

P.S. to Nick – in February we made a trip to Maui booked with 7500 miles Turkish Air miles to get there from a small airport with limited service. THANKS for the tip.

Question for Nick – he talked about splitting airfare between CSR (for family travel) and Ritz (for solo travel). What’s the benefit to this as opposed to just putting it all on CSR? (assuming you value 3x UR more than 4x Marriott points).

Nick Reyes
Editor

Just my wife not having to call to make the claim. She’ll have to deal with that inconvenience if we’re on an international trip because I’d rather not take 4x Marriott over 3x UR if we’re paying a few hundred in taxes. But if it’s a domestic flight where it’s only $5.60, the difference between 3x URs vs 4x Marriott doesn’t much matter to me. Being able to call and make the claim myself is worth losing the UR vs Marriott earnings in order to gain being able to deal with the call myself.

If we want to book a speculative cheap booking on an airline that might go bankrupt, which credit cards cover common carrier financial insolvency? Chase recently removed this benefit from the covered section of its travel protections to the uncovered section. Ritz and CSR cards both have changed the terms to reflect this policy change at the end of 2019. But according to Visa’s website all visa infinite cards are supposed to cover financial insolvency.
https://usa.visa.com/pay-with-visa/cards/visa-credit-cards/visa-infinite-credit-cards.html
https://usa.visa.com/dam/VCOM/regional/na/us/pay-with-visa/documents/trip-cancellation-interruption-infinite.pdf

So is financial insolvency covered or not on all visa infinite cards?

Finally, what other cards offer it? I went through all my credit cards and almost none that offered trip cancellation seemed to cover financial insolvency. One exception seemed to be BoA mastercards. My Spirit and Amtrak cards’ guide to benefits mention financial insolvency as covered…at least unless the benefits have changed since they send me my guide. It does seem to be very difficult to find the guide to benefits for BoA cards. Do you happen to have a link?

Thanks!

After your great job on helping a reader clean out his wallet I’ve decided that I need to do the same. Is there any reason for me to keep my United Club card if I also have a United Presidential Plus card? Also I recently sold 2 of my businesses last year is it smart to get rid of 2 of my Marriott-Amex cards related to those businesses? I will still have a personal and a different business Marriott-Amex cards that I plan to keep. I know Marriott have recently announced that you can get up to 30 nights via a personal card and a business card. Do you think they might allow you to get 15 nights for each of your cards?

Lastly I currently have a Citi Prestige card. I’d like to change it to a premier or double cash back card. My thinking is to change to a Citi Double cash and then apply for the Premier so that I can get the sign up bonus.

Thanks for all of your help. I read your site every day!

Waldorf astoria maldives has a base room on points called the reef villa now. Back in december of 2019 they had 2 rooms available for the 120k points a night. One was the reef villa and one was called the ocean villa. Is that the game as an over water villa? The cash prices were exactly the same on both. I am not seeing this available anymore. Hello Greg and Nick,
I’m debating what to do with my Prestige. My annual fee ($495) was paid last October, I haven’t used it for 4th night hotel nights or airline travel credits since paying the fee. I was able to use the $100 for Global entry refund, I tried calling them and asked them what type of incentives they could offer me to not cancel the card, given that we can’t book any travel due to corona virus. They offered nothing.
I’m leaning towards cancelling (or downgrading) prior to expiration next Oct ’20, but at least I’d like to use whatever residual value this card still has. I’m wondering if I should book an air travel for the value of the airline credit, and then if it works out, then I’d travel, otherwise I’d try to cancel or postpone the flight. My goal is to use up at least $250 from the airline credits, reimbursement is usually pretty quick.
Any thoughts? Any other ideas?
Thank you in advance.

I just changed jobs and need to roll over a 401k with $100k+ in value. Is transferring to a Merrill Edge account to qualify for Platinum Honors and then getting a BoA Premium Rewards card a no brainer?

I read your BoA post but can you break down the value you see in the program further? Especially the part about earning 2.65 cents cash back and buying points. I can see the argument that the $95 annual fee card better than the Freedom Unlimited but I’m not seeing the value as much compared to the Double Dash or Business Blue cards. There’s a $100 airline credit to offset the annual fee but I would argue that it’s only worth 50-75% of the value, maybe less in this environment.

Assuming I want to use those points for travel rather than straight cash back, 2 MR and TY points would get me around 3 cent value transferring to partners. There’s added flexibility with cash (like buying points or booking in cash) but I’m also saddled with a $95 annual fee, a $100 airline credit I need to figure out how to use and burning a 5/24 slot.

I have the Sapphire Reserve, a couple of Freedom cards, the Freedom Unlimited and the Ink Business Cash among other cards. I’m really regretting applying for the Freedom Unlimited – the value just isn’t there in terms of sign-up bonus and point earnings.

Hey Nick,

Here’s the description for the “Ocean Villa” which no longer exists on hiltion for award bookings. They seem to be identical. I have formed the hypothosis that I managed to some how book the over water villa for a short period of time when it was available as an award called an ocean villa.

From 283 sq.m./3,045 sq.ft., ocean terrace, pool, pavilion

Accommodates 2 adults and 2 children below 12 years. Embrace the ocean’s beauty with floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors for glorious views over the sparkling ocean to the far horizon. Relax with a king-sized Waldorf Astoria beds and state-of-the-art audio-visual entertainment. The bathroom has a soaking tub and indoor and outdoor showers, while a glass floor in the dressing room reveals the tropical reef and fish below. Outside, swim in the pool or the ocean, dine in the pavilion or laze on the daybed or in the overwater hammock.

Are there any new tricks to make aa domestic award availability show up with ba avoios? In the past you could keep refreshing the page and it would eventually appear but that doesn’t work anymore. Also can you guys write a post about about using ThankYou points to pay mortgage or cashing them out to my own bank to get a 1.0 redemption. Like which banks accept 3rd party checks. Thanks!

FYI The issue of TYP incorrectly appearing as expiring is documented in the FT wiki which is also a sticky page. https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/citi-thankyou-rewards/1391810-citi-thankyou-points-cancel-downgrade-expiration-considerations.html

I just received an Ink Business Pfd card. I applied before the new sign-up bonus, but can’t tell which bonus applies (& which minimum spend). When I call I get an automated system. How do I figure this out?

Have you tried sending a secure message through your online account? I’d try that and just say that you’re looking to confirm the terms of your welcome bonus.

Are you still making Kiva Loans? Has your behavior changed given the low & disappearing rate of repayment since COVID-19? Do you expect we will ever be paid back in full?

I have a question about product changing Chase business cards. I had the Ink Preferred but product changed it to an Ink Cash last week since I’m not using the travel category anymore on the Preferred. (I also have a CSR, so I can still earn 3x in travel on that and use it to transfer points or book the Chase portal). I’ve been wanting an Ink Cash for awhile now so I can use it at office supply stores to get 5x, but since Chase has made it so hard to get approved now for business cards it made sense to product change. My question is this: Eventually I’ll be able to travel again for business and would prefer to put those charges back onto an Ink Preferred, plus the sign up bonus will likely be higher for that card than other Chase Biz cards. How long do I need to wait to apply for a new Ink Preferred? A year after a product change? Or can I do it sooner (provided business travel even returns by then)?

I have three American Airlines cards. Do I get one free bag for each card? Haven’t tried it because I’ve never needed it before but will shortly what’s gonna

Nick Reyes

No, just one free bag per passenger up to whatever the limit is (I think it’s you and up to 4 passengers on the AA cards, but check each card’s benefits on our card pages depending on which cards you have — see the best offers page for links to full card info on each card).

Question: have reservation on Iceland Air PDX-KEF-FRA round trip 6/20-6/30. They have not cancelled the flight. However the PDX-KEF flights (both ways) does not show up on their website or any 3rd party site including google flights and award search on Alaska. The only route that is bookable is via SEA. The flight is not full based checking the seat map for seating assignments. I think this flight is cancelled but they did not announce so they do not have to refund anyone yet. I feel I am in a game of chicken with them. I have until 5/31 to accept a voucher (with pretty good terms, but hate the idea of giving an interest free loan to an airline). My instinct is to wait it out betting they will not “reinstate” this flight, that it will be cancelled, and therefore get a refund. What do you think?

I know it is out of the time frame for the broadcast, but I could really use advice on this one. Greg, Nick, Stephen…any help? My plan at this time is to hold out, await the actual cancellation of the flight(s) and get a refund. Am I making the best decision here?

Yes, put this on the podcast, and no it does not need its own show. The same readers / listeners are listening to both. We read to get information. Keep it symbol, and yes podcast work better for me too.
