Chase officially extends payment deadline by 3 months for some

Yesterday, Miles to Memories reported info from a Chase rep indicating that Chase is automatically extending the time period to meet minimum spending requirements by 3 months for those who opened new accounts between January 1, 2020 and March 31, 2020, though note that a data point sent to us today from a reader indicates that this may not apply to the second half of a two-tiered bonus offer as outlined below.

According to their source, this will be automatic for those who opened accounts between 1/1 and 3/31, thereby giving those customers 6 months total to meet minimum spending requirements. Personally, I’d still send a secure message to get this confirmed in writing since we haven’t seen an announcement posted on Chase’s website — unlike Amex, which has posted such an announcement. That’s not to say that I don’t trust M2M’s source, but just today we received a reader report from someone who received somewhat confusing information from Chase on this:

I got a United business card a couple months ago that had a two-tier bonus structure. I wrote to them about a week ago asking for an extension of part two of the offer and just received the following response:

Hello, Thank you for contacting Chase regarding your account ending in XXXX. I will be happy to help you today.

At this time we are extending the first three month spend on the first tier of your offer. I do see you have met your spend. The second tier offer you have six months and this has not been extended at this time.

Your offers:
-50,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening Charges must post by XXXX, 2020, to be eligible for the bonus. We have extended this spend; but you met your spend as of XXXX, 2020.
-50,000 bonus miles after you spend $25,000 on purchases in the first 6 months from account opening.
You have until XXXX, 2020, to meet the spend requirement. If you meet the spending requirement, the bonus will post to your account 6 to 8 weeks after the billing cycle in which you qualify.

You’ll be eligible for the bonus as long as: – You haven’t received a new cardmember bonus on this account in the past 24 months. – Your account is open and not in default when we post the bonus. Purchases do not include balance transfers, cash advances, travelers checks, foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers or similar cash-like transactions, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers or similar betting transactions, any checks that access your account, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, and fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable. So, at least for now, no extension on tier two.

As the reader notes, Chase said that they were extending the initial 3-month timeframe for the first half of that offer, but not the second tier of that spending offer. There has similarly been a 100K offer on the Southwest Business Performance card with two tiers: the first tier requires $5K spend in the first 3 months to trigger the first 70K bonus points and then $25K in total purchases in the first 6 months to trigger an additional 30K bonus points. Based on the response the reader above got, you’d now have 6 months to meet the initial $5K spend on that offer, but you may not get any additional time to meet the $25K required for the second tier.

That’s confusing in my opinion and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Chase modify that and potentially extend the extension to include April applicants, though at this point it only applies to those who opened accounts between 1/1 and 3/31/20. Hopefully Chase eventually clarifies this in writing on their website to erase any doubt.
