Hi Greg,

I have a USBank MC GC and a Metabank Visa GC (200/ea) Do you know how I can unload them to BB if I don’t have a zip? I already set a PIN for both.

FrequentMiler
Guest

I’m not sure what you mean by you don’t have a zip? As long as you have a PIN, you should b able to use the gift cards at Walmart

JC
Guest
JC

Well I tried at WM but the cashier at the MC didn’t let me do it b/c they were told not to accept it. The cashiers on the floor are not allowed to load BBs at all. I wanted to load them to bluebird but I need a zip code to add the as debits. Let me know what you think.

Thanks

Greg,

In figuring the costs/point value on churning I divide the points by cost? Is it the other way around Cost by how many points I earned?

Thanks

FrequentMiler
Guest

Just think of the word “per” as a division sign:
cost per point = cost / points (cost divided by points)

Hi,
I live in Ann Arbor MI.
Where could I get vanilla reload packs in the area?
I just open up AMEX PRG and wanted to earn points on groceries and gas stations.

I tried out family dollar and dollar general but they dont take AMEX and it is not the scratch pack like in CVS.

Also I tries to work on Kroger prepaid card with reload pack but they only take cash.

I fould out that Famiily Fare grocery store sells vanilla realod pack but it is 50 miles away from home.

I am running BB with Chase Ink so the giftcard option is not available for me. Please help me out

Thanks

FrequentMiler
Guest

Steve, all of the CVS stores in Ann Arbor sell Vanilla Reload cards except for the one downtown on State St. I don’t know of any groceries or gas stations in the area that sell them and take credit cards anymore. You can buy other cards at 7-11 with credit card.

Steve
Guest
Steve

I check out all of the 7-11 in ann arbor zone but they dont take AMEX PRG with Vanilla Reload. It is useless for My vanilla Debit Card.
I am going to try out for one vanilla cards in 7-11 and other places under AMEX supermarket and gas station categories.

FrequentMiler
Guest

7-11 registers are coded to not allow Vanilla Reload purchases by credit card.

Steve
Guest
Steve

Is it just AMEX or all other cards?
BTW, are 7-11 under the category of gas station?
Even without Gas pump?

Except loading on to BB and Walmart Bill Pay are there another way to liquify gift cards without risking my self. Like purchasing money order.
Or is it okay to purchase one money order monthly? then how much recommended?

Thanks

FrequentMiler

Yes, some 7-11s code as gas stations even if there are no gas pumps. Lookup your local 7-11s here: https://www.visa.com/supplierlocator/index.jsp.

Money orders are too complicated of a subject to cover in blog comments

I am new to this quest for travel miles and dollars. Your blog is so helpful. It has been difficult to book award travel on Delta and United for four different domestic trips in June and July. I expected this with Delta but thought United would be easier to book. Any tips about this? I am tempted to stick with cash back cards because I know I can spend the cash.

FrequentMiler
Guest

Ironically, booking domestic awards can often be harder than international awards in my experience. Does Southwest fly out of your airport? If so, they are a great option for domestic flights. Also, you might find better availability with AA/USAir now that they are merging. For nonstop domestic flights on either of those, you can do very well using British Airways Avios. You can get either Southwest points or BA Avios by transferring points from Chase Sapphire Preferred (or Ink Plus or Ink Bold). Also, you can get BA Avios from any Amex Membership Rewards card that allows point transfers (which is most of them). Going with cash back or fixed point cards can make a ton of sense too, especially if you fly mostly domestic flights.

JC

Sorry, now I know how I confused you. I meant load them through the bluebird website, $100 per day.

Amex won’t let you load Bluebird online with gift cards.

I just did my fifth App-o-Rama (6 cards/4banks) in the span of 13 months. All 4 banks (US Bank, Barclays, Citi, and Chase) pulled TransUnion and I now have 14 hard pulls, but my Faco on CreditKarma was 775 today down from 784 last week. If I freeze my Transunion report, will banks pull from Equifax(only have 3 inquiries) and Experian(10 Inquiries)? I have 6 months before the Transunion inquiries start coming off my report. Also, I applied for the Lufthansa 50k offer yesterday and was immediately approved for a $19,000 limit so I decided to apply for a 6th card of the day just to see if I would get approved and I was approved for a 3rd US Airways World Mastercard after a quick call.

Can you do some analysis on the value of each program for those of us who sell points to brokers? After this united devaluation happened, a lot of brokers significantly reduced the cent per point payout for Chase UR. Can one airlines devaluation affect Chase value that much? Thanks.

FrequentMiler

I don’t have any experience with brokers. Since most, if not all, award programs have terms against selling points or miles, I have stayed away from that topic.

Did you know that Bluebird’s Bill Pay has problems?

Since they “upgraded” (destroyed?) their site this week. Some people claim to be able to use it on an iPhone, but I have tried 3 PCs with varying browsers and my tablet – all get stuck at the same point.

Called every day and still it is not working, finally they are admitting it but say they have no idea when it will be fixed.

So, I have a large balance with no easy way to get to it to pay a lot of bills. I have now linked a different bank account and when it is fully linked (in 3 days) I can transfer funds (which will take another 5 days)!

They also told me I could try Bluebird checks but that may not be reliable as “some banks have not been accepting them”!!

I chose AMEX over GoBank as I thought they would be more reliable despite the pathetic-looking website – looks like I made a mistake.

I asked for a manager – no, you can only get a supervisor (Managers don’t take calls). I asked for the Legal Department’s phone number – they don’t know it. I asked how I can write and complain and they pointed me to a site with a downloadable form which I can fax in or mail.

Can you try it and see if it works for you?

FrequentMiler
Guest

I always pay my bills by moving the money to my regular bank and paying from there. I haven’t heard these issues from others. I wonder if it is fixed by now?

What are your current perspectives about Serve vs. Bluebird? Your original post (and the followup in Sept) didn’t include AMEX offers or ISIS wallet as considerations. Would love an update.

FrequentMiler
Guest

Great question. It does seem that Serve has risen above Bluebird with the latest round of changes. One thing I don’t like with Serve is that they charge a service fee if you don’t load a certain amount every month. For many of us that’s not an issue but for those who just use the card occasionally, I think that bluebird is still superior.

The two Staples I have used to purchase Visas with GC will no longer do this. Have you heard of this from others?

FrequentMiler

I assume you are talking about using a Staples gift card in-store to buy other gift cards? Yes, my local Staples has stopped allowing it too. I’ve heard mixed results from others so I believe that the register will still allow it, but many cashiers will not.

Question: I have an Amazon VISA (chase) with about 2900 points on it. I’m not using the card anymore, and I was wondering what’s the best way to use the points. I can get cash back at 1 cent per point; is there any other way to redeem the points that would be worth more?

Thanks!

I don’t know if this is possible, but figured I’d ask. I want to fly to Israel from NYC with a friend in about a month, and would love to do it on miles. I currently have 20,000 miles on my Chase Freedom, and am working towards the spending threshold on a Chase Sapphire Preferred. That should give me 60K miles – would that be enough? If not, is there a quick way to get the remainder of the points I would need?

Thanks!!

FrequentMiler
Guest

With most programs, you’ll need 80,000 points for a round trip to Israel. While that’s easy to get with credit cards, it’s not easy to get the points fast enough to travel within a month. If you could wait a bit, here are some more cards you could choose from to bump up your balance:

Personal cards:

United MileagePlus 50K offer (+5K for adding 2nd user)

Small business cards:

Ink Plus 50K offer
Ink Bold 50K offer
United MileagePlus Business 50K offer

EL
Guest
EL

Okay, thanks for answering! So it’s 40K miles per person each way??

Then I doubt I can collect the points in a month, oh well. I’ll look into that united card, though.

Thanks for your help!

What happens if you sign up for an Amex SPG card and get approved but you had the same card and canceled it 6 months before. Do you have experience not seeing the bonus post? I know Citi won’t even approve you for a card if you have not waited the proper amount of time. Is this the same with Amex or will they approve you but just not post the bonus?

Hello, I have read on this article
https://frequentmiler.boardingarea.com/2014/01/06/dont-agree-with-me/
that you have a ton of Delta miles. I have a family of 6 (yeah I know… tough) and I am planning a trip to Argentina by the end of 2014. My wife and I want to accumulate 300,000 miles in Delta each but we currently have 150,000 and 100,000 respectively. I have the Delta card and SPG as well. What other techniques can I use to get more miles in Delta? Thank you in advance.

FrequentMiler

Another option is to earn Amex Membership Rewards points which can be transferred to Delta. Most of the best Amex MR offers are targeted, but you could signup for the Amex Platinum Mercedes Benz card for 50K points each. Another option is the Suntrust Delta debit card.

FM,

I owe u a HUGE thank you. Last year 2 of ur posts helped me earn 100’s of thousands of points.
In August u posted about a 140k Ritz offer. U were the only blogger that made any mention of this. (I typically check Boarding area, points guy, and MMS nearly everyday. Among some others periodically.). I had applied for the 70k offer in May. I had 100k Marriott/ritz pts and really needed the 70k for a 5 night aspirational ritz stay. plus wanted a card that refunded baggage fees. Not the greatest deal for 395 fee but bit the bullet. 3 months later ur post led me to call in and ask for an additional 70k pts and they asked me a bunch of questions. I thought there was no way they were just going to credit 70k pts. But low and behold the next day they were in my account. Thank u thank u thank u!!!
Next and even more lucrative was back in April when u were one of VERY few bloggers that posted about the 5x Citi TYP with 5x on drugs, grocery, and gas. What a deal!! I have a bottomless pit of vanilla reloads a block from my house. And with 2 bluebird accounts I have been spending 8-12k on this card since April and I’ve gone from 0 Ty pts to almost 500k now. Not sure if I would’ve been able to get in on this fast enough without ur post. So thank u so much again. Keep up the good work!!!

I entered HI info into the CC lines and use my billing address( I didnt register for HI card). I don’t know if this method still works or not. It has been a year since I did it. I have heard from others that it didn’t work anymore, so that might be true. You could try the following:
1) register the HI card with your zip code and try again
2) If you still get an error, call Lowes to complain about it. You should be able to use this card for any purchase at Lowes

Greg, I enjoy your blog.. great info.. Thank you.

Newbie question… when you go thru a portal to shop such as the Ultimate Rewards Mall…do you get UR points just for shopping there– AND more points if you make the purchase on the Bold Ink card?

FrequentMiler

misty: yes, you get points for both. So, for example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card automatically gives 2X points for travel. If you go through the UR mall to a travel site that offers 3X points, then you’ll get a total of 5X for that purchase.

Hi frequent miler! I am a loyal reader of your blog for over a year now and always appreciate the work you put into this blog!
I wanted to make you aware (enlist your help?) that a large number of topcashback users have all been locked out of our accounts with the “reason” being we order Amex gift cards. As far as I’m aware ordering products doesn’t violate their T&C’s but they are taking issue with us anyway. Additionally, some of us have cash back pending that we seeming have lost access to.

Hi,

I have a question. I need to pay travel agency for their services. The amount is over $3000. This travel agency adds 10% fee if paid by Paypal. Paying by Paypal is going to be my last resort due to the fee.
This agency gave me their bank routing number and their account number. This bank is not located in the USA.
Is there a more or less painless way to use my miles-earning, spend-thirsty credit cards or my Vanilla cards or my Amex gift cards or my Bluebird account funds to TRANSFER $3000 to this bank to pay for their travel services?

I asked them whether I can pay in Vanilla cards and they told me ‘NO’. PLease help

Why Buy VR Cards when the Serve “starter” card has Zero transaction fees?

FrequentMiler

The starter card can only be used as a credit card until you register for a full Serve account. Once you do that, you can use the $500 to pay bills or withdraw cash to your bank, etc. However, you can only do that once per person. Amex won’t allow you to have more than one Serve account.

Yes, if you buy e-gift cards to other merchants (kohls, sears, home depot, etc) at Staples.com, you’ll earn cash back via uPromise. When Staples sells their own e-gift cards (during promotions), the purchase is handled differently and does not earn cash back

With the latest points devaluation on Hotels. Can you offer advice or recommendation on the valuation of earning ultimate points; Hilton vs Hyatt.
With Chase cards you can earn 5x points at office supply stores but most likely only in $200 gift cards increments.
The Hilton Surpass has 6x points at gas stations which carry $500 cards.
Appears Hilton points would be easier to accumulate but Chase cards give you more flexibility towards, Hyattt, Southwest, etc… Thoughts on which strategy to pursue???

FrequentMiler
Guest

With Hilton’s devaluations, I think you can expect to get around .4 cents per point value (often less and sometimes more). Given that, 6X at gas stations is roughly 2.4%, but only if you actually use those points for Hilton stays. Meanwhile, Chase Ink cards offer 2X at gas stations and points can be used for cash back at 1 cent per point, airfare at 1.25 cents per point, or transfers to airlines, hotels and Amtrak where you can potentially get much more value. So, given both the flexibility of the Ultimate Rewards points and the potential for greater value, I would definitely go with Ultimate Rewards. Now, another question you should ask is: Ultimate Rewards vs. Membership Rewards. Soon Amex will offer cards with better gas station multiples (Amex EveryDay cards). I’ll try to address that question in future posts.

Hi,

I have couple question regarding shopdiscover.
You mentioned that you get 5% cashback with their shopdiscover portal of staples. So if I purchase 100 physical GC with chase ink card, then do I get 5% cash back like visa savings edge? like 1% cash back shows up on the statement.

Thanks

FrequentMiler

With Discover, you earn cash back in the form of a “Cashback bonus”. That bonus can be converted to real cash as a statement credit or direct deposit to your bank, or you can use it to buy partner gift cards and sometimes get very good deals that way (like 20% off Staples gift cards, for example)

Hi Frequent Miler!

Loving your site and the extremely useful tips!!
I have been caught in a situation with Sears and would love your advice on how to get what i need, as Sears policy is making our lives difficult!
Quick Background:
Bought a Samsung tv about 3 years ago at Sears with warranty. The tv had some display issues, we exercised our warranty and they took it for repair. Long story short – it cannot be repaired. They are willing to give us full credit for the TV to purchase a replacement, which is great – but, sears canada no longer carries a model tv that is in comparison to what we bought.
We want to purchase something from best buy or future shop. They will either give us sears points or a credit to a sears location of our choice. What should we do? How can we buy our tv at future shop or best buy!

Thanks so much, and keep helping the average consumer to prosper!

FrequentMiler
Guest

Samantha, Sorry for taking so long to answer this! Have you tried insisting on getting a check back instead? Try asking to speak to a supervisor if the first person won’t give you that option. Otherwise, if you’re forced to take points or store credit, go for the credit. Assuming you get it in the form of a Sears gift card, that can be used for many things including that it can be used to buy other gift cards in-store. I doubt you’ll find best buy gift cards there, but you might find Amazon Kindle gift cards. Those can be used for anything on Amazon.com so you could theoretically buy dozens of $50 Amazon gift cards and then use all of that credit to buy your TV online. It will be a big pain typing in all of those gift card numbers though!

Hi,
I’m in the market to purchase a used car, and I wondered if I could put part of the purchase on a mileage earning credit card? Have you or any of your readers every tried to do this? I’m also wondering if any airlines have deals w/car manufacturer whereby you get bonus points for purchasing a car, in that case it would be a new car, which I may consider. I haven’t read a single blog about leveraging a mileage or points earning card in the area of car purchases, so I figured if anyone might know, it would be you. I have no idea how to go about searching for something like this. Any ideas? Thanks!

I would guess that the reason that people don’t talk much about putting a car purchase on a points/miles card is that most people don’t have the cash to pay that large a purchase off in full in a month.

If you do, and have been accumulating the cash for a new car, that sounds like a great way to get lots of points, fast. But if you would have to carry the balance, well, not so great, you know?

Hi MickiSue, Indeed. I have enough to be able to pay for part of the cost, not the entire cost. We’ll see what happens.

Most car dealers have a cap on how much they are willing to take on a credit card. In my experience, dealers will take somewhere in the $2K to $3K range. Not sure about used car dealers. As to credit cards rewards: GM has a few versions of a credit card where the points earned can be used to pay for a car. And, the Amex Platinum Mercedes card has some perks regarding buying Mercedes cars.

I’m interested in putting up to around $5K on the card, and of course paying it off right away, since leaving a balance would be silly and defeat the whole purpose of this exercise. Indeed, I’m looking for a used car, so I’m fully expecting to get rejected, but then again they’ll lose a sale, so it’s really up to them. I have time to make my purchase. Happy to report back on what my experience is, although this is probably of little interest to anyone. Thanks again!

Thanks, Dora. Good to know. I’m looking to put a higher amount, but I’m getting the feeling that it’s really different everywhere and it will depend on the dealer, so I’m getting my haggling skills sharpened. Thanks for the tip!

Hello,

I plan for a family vacation in Feb 2015. We want to stay in Taiwan for a week and then another week in Hawaii. We live in Seattle, WA. I have enough miles from both UA and AA. But I am not sure which one is better to use for this trip. I am thinking about UA because it still allows stopovers but AA doesn’t anymore. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Yes, thanks to the allowed stopovers, UA would be great if you’re OK with economy class. If you want to fly business class or first class, you might be better off with AA just because of the increased cost of partner awards on UA

Bought VR at Lucky’s yesterday. Not today. Store manager was there and said there was a system update on Wednesday (they’re always on Wednesday apparently). Apparently it now says onscreen that this is only cash or debit. Don’t know if it would go through if you got them to try it, but I suspect not. Presume this is system wide.

How can I file BBB complaint to get my miles back for purchase thru the Barclay rewardboost shopping portal? What’s the address to send the complaint to? It has almost been 60 days and still didn’t get the miles and it is not even tracked. I have been calling and speaking to different managers but all they do is give you separate case numbers. Today when I spoke to a manager, She said I already received the miles and it is shown in statement. She said I got 6k miles recently. I told her that was the regular 2 miles per dollar purchase and it has nothing to do with additional miles we can earn from the portal and she was totally clueless about the portal and hung up on me.

Any advice is appreciated!

I am really interested in your blog. I am ale=ways the one that never seems to have mileage and with 2 children on the east coast that would be helpful. I read where you suggested to buy gift cards and get mileage and then use them for shopping. The idea is terrific, I just can not figure out where to buy the gift cards and get mileage. Please help me and tell me. Than you so much.

How are rewards points taxed? I am thinking about signing up for a card to start earning (and ultimately using!) points for future trips, but a co-worker warned me of the high tax rates for these miles/points/etc. What do you know about this issue?

Thanks,
Tim

It seems your lab page (https://frequentmiler.boardingarea.com/laboratory/) no longer has the sort and search function.

Any idea?

You’ve probably heard of this already, but Chase is facing a class action lawsuit alleging deceptive rewards programs that lure applicants in, then Chase cancels the accounts for no reason once points have accumulated:

Hello, I have a quick question. I need to make some purchases at Homedepot.com and I saw that my Shopdiscover is extra 5% on that stuff this period. So I can get 10% back I think. Can I also pay with gift cards? So that I can go buy $1000 HD gift cards at staples with my Ink and then use them through the shop discover portal to pay for my purchase and still get my $100 back?

Hope you can help. I have a number of AMEX prepaid credit cards that I have used for loading VR cards.

Now that I cannot get any VR cards, what else can I use to load these Prepaid cards?

Gary and Ben have been acting clever, claiming the SPG Business Amex is the best card to use at domestic hyatts in various posts.
I suggest you offer a counterpoint post in looking to the Amex SimplyCash business, offering 5% Open Savings (like the SPG Bus Amex) plus 3% cash back given hotels are your selected category. That’s 8% cash back, or, vs the SPG amex, a trade-off of 3 cents per starpoint (not counting the annual fee difference or a liquidity premium).

As of today I am unable to use VISA gift cards to reload Bluebird, AccountNow or Walmart Moneycard at my area Walmarts (Memphis, TN). At the kiosk and at the register the result is the same, it says tender not accepted after I key in my PIN. I tried at two separate Walmart stores to be sure.

Hello,

Let just start off by saying thanks. With your guidance, I have been able to fly to london three times to visit family and even flew family members simply by paying taxes. I also had the opportunity to fly to Kenya using airline miles. I have about twenty credit cards now and I believe that the annual feel should be kicking in later on this year. I am tempted to close the credit cards but will my airline miles remain if I shut down the account? Also, only reason I have managed to reach my spending limits using these credit cards were through vanilla reloads. First going through Office Depot to purchase them and after it became cash only, would go through cvs which of course didn’t last long. Mind you I also purchased other things so that the it didn’t look look like I was taking advantage of the credit card.

Now that the methods I have previously used to reach spending limits are no longer possible, I would like to know what simple steps are there to reach spending limits. I don’t want to end up getting stuck with a ton of prepaid credit cards nor do I want to purchase products only to sell them on eBay. I was new to this and having methods like purchasing reload cards and loading it to my bluebird was a simple two step process. Long story short, how do I go about reaching my spending limits without going through all the extra hassle?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I just was doing my daily check on Alaska Airline’s shopping site (insert comment about having no life here), and noticed that Amex gift cards were gone. I tried back a couple of hours later, and saw the same. Checked Top Cashback, and the search function didn’t even show AGC’s. Not sure exactly what this means, but I’m real sure I don’t like it.

Did it show right after the airline charges posted? I called the ans they said that it will show up on the printed statement. Just wanted to find out your experience. Thanks

It just occurred to me that it might be possible to get perpetual Marriott Gold. The Ritz-Carlton Visa comes with free Marriott Gold for the first year, and if I am not mistaken, if you spend >$10k for each membership year, you get Marriott until Dec 31st for the following year.

So here’s what I have:
Mar 2014: Signed up for Ritz-Carlton, Gold status good till end 2015?
Mar 2015: Renew for Ritz-Carlton, met $10k spend, Gold status extended till 2016. After that is confirmed, cancel card to get back AF
Mar 2016: Sit around enjoy Gold Status
Mar 2017: Signup for new Ritz-Carlton, get complimentary gold status again?

Would this work?

We live in NC. My wife and I both temporary bought cards in South Carolina. Got permanent cards and activated on line without problems. Today we used them in NC Target to make purchases but were unsuccessful when trying to load them with credit cards. Target personnel pleasant but unfamiliar with product. We will try again in near future.

I got the card in Memphis. I live in NJ and have been successful loading money into my account at my local Target. Also, I brought home two extra cards and my sister was able to activate it in NJ, even though it will not be up and running in NJ until the next quarter.

I’m thinking of applying for a Discover card to get access to their portal. I see Saks Fifth Ave gets 15% off, but didn’t see any reports on Saks in the Laboratory. Is it possible to buy a Saks gift card from the website (15%) using the Freedom card (5x), then use the gift card to buy an item on the website (another 15%)? Total would be 30% + 5 UR. Also, is 15% the norm on Discover portal for Saks? Thanks

You mentioned that you fund your niece’s Serve card with Arrival, since with Arrival the AU has a different card number than the primary.

But doesn’t Serve verify specifically that the card is primary? Is the separate account number the silver bullet?

You often mention tips for having portal track properly. Any reason not to just go incognito? Wouldn’t that make sure that no other cookies are there?

Joe

Hey! Have you had experience buying an item/items one day, discovering a better portal offer the next day, repurchasing the same item(s) and returning the first order? In my case, purchased via UR portal at staples.com for 2p/$, then today repurchased via United at 6mi/$. Used the same CC acct, but a different CC number (girlfriends card for the second purchase, Ink Plus). When I return the first order, will it possibly result in loss of portal points/miles?

Thanks!

Do you know if it’s possible to buy Uber gift cards for someone else if you don’t have an Uber account? I added the Uber AMEX offer to my parents’ AMEX cards a while ago, but they don’t have any interest in Uber. I’m not sure it would be worth signing up just to get the $10 credit. And I suspect if I log in to my account and use their cards to buy gift cards, they’ll all be rejected.

When, exactly, do you use the Barclay Arrival Card? Since the Barclay Arrival Card offers double miles on everything, should I use it exclusively? I have been using my Sapphire Preferred for travel and dining, but I’m wondering if I should change this.
Also, my husband has been turned down for the last two cards he applied for, although
he has no debt and pays all his bills on time. I think it’s because he has applied for so many cards, although, I have applied for just as many and haven’t been denied, as he has been. What do you think?
Thanks for answering these questions.
