Correction: business class to Europe for 120K Marriott points

Update: The chart provided by TAP Air Portugal already reflects the 50% discount on award rates. The wording on the promo page and labeling of the chart made it appear that the provided chart was displaying the high season prices before the promotion, but it is rather displaying prices after the discount. Thanks to readers Nun and Joe for pointing it out and my apologies for misunderstanding this one.

TAP Air Portugal is offering 50% off on all award redemptions when you book by January 31st for travel from February 1-22, 2019 or March 12-31, 2019. That means economy class is available for 13K miles one-way or business class can be booked for 25K miles one-way to Portugal (or 26,125 miles to Europe 1 or Europe 2) Update: Economy class is 26K one-way or business class is 50K one-way with this promotion. TAP Air Portugal is a Marriott Rewards transfer partner, so 60K 120K Marriott points would give you the the 25K 50K miles you need for a one-way business class flight to Portugal (or transfer a couple thousand more to get to the rest of Europe). While it is well known that TAP Air Portugal offers really cheap business class fares from Europe to the US, this could be a good deal for Marriott points — though the deal is not as good as it initially seemed.

I flew TAP Air Portugal’s business class from Lisbon to Boston in late 2017 and it was pretty nice.

Quick Thoughts

TAP Air Portugal offers business class flights from much of Scandinavia to the east coast of the US from the $600’s to $800’s one-way pretty regularly, but flights from the US to Europe are typically more expensive. Yet even at those cheap prices, using 60K Marriott points likely gives you better than 1c per point in value, which is a very good deal for Marriott points. Flying from the US to Europe is an better deal. Here is the award chart with North America highlighted — note that we have updated this post because this chart reflects the already discounted prices):

Remember that Marriott Rewards transfer 3:1 to TAP Air Portugal. When you transfer 60K Marriott points, you’ll get 5,000 bonus miles. In other words, 60K Marriott Rewards = 25K TAP Air Portugal miles.

I flew TAP Air Portugal business class in late 2017 (as shown in the picture above) and it was surprisingly nice. Service doesn’t match what you’ll get on some of the glitzier carriers, but it was better than I expected. They ran out of my entree selection, but the flight attendant was very apologetic and eventually found an extra one. The seat was very good and they had an interesting selection of Portuguese wines – I’d definitely fly them again.

TAP is also offering 50% off on purchasing miles and on cash & miles redemptions. See the rest of the details of the award chart with the discount already baked in) here.

Does this apply to star alliance award redemptions as well? How easy is it to book–Can you book online? Also any restrictions like must fly in same cabin or can’t piece together awards?

I just bought 4 tix for TAPs new flight from LIS-SFO – the price was about 1/4 of what most airlines charge for summer nonstop to/from Europe in business class – and you earn UA EQM to boot.

Thanks for the information, couldn’t precisely confirm if May is high season in Europe.
I need to fly to LIS in May and checked the prices from SFO and they somewhat high, i’m at South America at the moment but the prices ex-Here are crazy, looking to position somewhere else for a nice J fare.

What about “carrier-imposed surcharges” on TAP? How bad are they?

You can buy 60,000 Marriott points for $750. So this could be a first class ticket for $750, if you don’t have the points or can no longer get approved for a marriott or SPG card…

Much cheaper to buy the miles with Tap at 50% off

THIS IS A GOOD WAY TO GET RID OF MARRIOTT POINTS…CONSIDERING THE WAY they are treating folks post-merger I’m seriously considering getting rid of all my cards with spg/m and putting points to use elsewhere. Apparently I’m not the only one having issues or the only one who was lied to…

Do you have to register for a TAP account first? If so, which one?

This is incorrect. TAP costs 100k ONE WAY in business, 200k round trip. The sale is now 50k each way on limited dates. I’ve looked into TAP before. Try booking 3/14-3/21 JFK-LIS in business. It’s 100k roundtrip. For a summer trip it’s 200k.

Yes I see what you mean, where did the above award chart come from?

The above award chart already includes the 50% discount. Doctor of Credit already noticed the mistake and corrected his headline. Nick and Greg need to get on the ball.

They do a great job, but you shouldn’t let a mistake like this sit around for a few days.

DOC et al “noticed” because I informed them. It’s an easy mistake to make, because that chart is unclear. I actually have TAP some miles and have looked into ticketing w/them in the past.
