Hilton rolling over all 2020 nights to next year

3

Today Hilton has announced that they are rolling over all nights earned from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020. In other words, if you have Diamond status this year and you make any stays this year, they will all count toward Diamond qualification next year. That’s a great deal for those who qualify on nights/stays rather than through a credit card.

The Deal

Quick Thoughts

I suspect that most Frequent Miler readers who have Hilton elite status have likely either earned Gold or Diamond status from credit cards (given that you can get Gold status with a card that has a $95 annual fee or Diamond from a card with a $450 annual fee). However, if you were considering canceling one of those cards that comes with elite status, this might make the decision a bit easier. If you have stayed / will stay some nights this year and you can combine those with stays next year, you may be able to qualify for 2022-2023 status relatively easily.

For example, let’s say that you have Diamond status now and you’ll end up with 20 nights stayed this year. Since your current status is extended until 2022, you will already have Diamond status next year — and you’ll be 20 nights toward earning that status for the 2022-2023 membership year (which would be earned during 2021). In other words, you will only need 40 more nights next year would earn Diamond status until 2023. That’s a pretty good deal.

Unfortunately, according to the FAQ pages, members can only roll over nights, not stays. Given that Gold status, arguably the best mid-tier hotel status available since it means free breakfast at nearly all Hilton properties, ordinarily requires 40 nights or 20 stays, it would be relatively easy for many folks to get to 20 stays split over 2 years — though I imagine that many frequent guests will find 40 nights relatively easy as well if they are invested in the Hilton ecosystem. Sixty nights for Diamond status isn’t bad either when you combine any nights you already had this year with any nights you intend to stay by the end of this year and next year’s travel. See our Hilton Honors Complete Guide for full details on the elite program.
