Toward hacking Asia Miles: the unified oneworld award chart

In my recent post “Searching for business class sweet-spots in Iberia’s OneWorld award chart,” I wrote “I haven’t yet compared Iberia Avios awards to those available from other OneWorld airlines such as Cathay Pacific.”  Well, now that Cathay Pacific is out with a new 60K signup offer, it’s time to take a look. Cathay Pacific offers two different award charts depending upon how many non-Cathay OneWorld partners you fly.  If your itinerary includes more than…

Buy miles via ThankYou Rewards

In general I don’t recommend purchasing airline miles, even at a discount, but if you have an immediate need for miles for a high value award, it can make sense. If you have a Citi Premier or Citi Prestige card and a few ThankYou points in your account, you can buy miles indirectly through the ThankYou Rewards program at a cost of only 2.5 cents per mile (or less when transfer bonuses are in effect). The best airline programs for these indirect mileage purchases, in my opinion, are: Air France, Cathay Pacific, Singapore, and Virgin Atlantic.

[Expired] New 50K offer on Cathay Pacific card

About six months ago, Synchrony Bank launched Cathay Pacific credit card and Greg asked: Should you be inspired to earn 25,000 miles with the Cathay Pacific Visa? To sum that up, the answer was more or less: “Meh.” It might have made sense for some to make a quick mileage score, but it wasn’t all that special. That “Meh” might just turn into a “Yeah” with the new signup bonus being offered: 50,000 Asia Miles after spending $2,500 in…

Business class for two: Cathay Pacific Companion Ticket Awards

Cathay Pacific Business Class

Thanks to Cathay Pacific’s ho-hum new credit card, I spent some time looking at Cathay’s award charts and I stumbled upon something potentially very interesting…  Companion Ticket Awards.  Companion Ticket Awards might be an awesome way to book a couple into one of the best business class products around. Here’s the relevant section of the award chart: The existence of these awards immediately brought a number of questions to my mind… What are the requirements…

Should you be inspired to earn 25,000 bonus miles with the Cathay Pacific Visa?

Cathay Pacific Visa

Cathay Pacific has unveiled a credit card for US residents.  The card is issued by Synchrony Bank and it offers 25K miles after $2,500 spend.  It gives first year cardholders free green tier membership in the Marco Polo Club (after the first 12 months you can pay $100 per year to keep that status).  The benefits of green tier are pretty weak: priority boarding for yourself only, and the ability to use Cathay Pacific Asia…

Delta vs. Cathay Pacific Business Class. Which is better?

In the past few months I’ve had the pleasure of flying both Cathay Pacific and Delta international business class.  Which was better?  The answer may surprise you.   Cathay Pacific As I described in the post “So Long Alaska, and Thanks for All the Fish,” my family and I flew Cathay Pacific on an overnight flight from Vancouver to JFK in August.  We spent 25,000 British Avios points each for the one-way trip. This is a…
