Marriott Bonvoy: Book Cat 7 Off-Peak with 50K Certs

Here’s a sliver of a silver lining for Bonvoy fans… Now that Marriott has implemented their Peak and Off-Peak award pricing, those with 50K free night certificates can book Category 7 hotels when they are priced at off-peak rates.  Previously, 50K certs could only be used for Category 6 hotels and below.  The bad news, of course, is that when Category 6 hotels are Peak priced, we won’t be able to use our 50K certificates…

That drops the price to $8.75 per 1,000 points — or 0.875cpp. That can be a really good deal and can be a cheap way to shorten your path to elite status since you could potentially snag Cat 1 nights from $35 per night for 5-night stays. The Deal Marriott is offering 30% off on purchased points through…

Why I like Marriott resort fees as a percent of room rate

I really like the Inn at Bay Harbor, in northern Michigan.  The standard award price for this hotel is 35K points, which makes it a perfect place to spend those 35K free night certificates that come annually with a number of Marriott credit cards (at least until Peak pricing ruins everything). In general, I hate resort fees.  With all else equal, I’d prefer to book awards with Hyatt or Hilton, neither of which charges resort…

Conrad Bora Bora vs St. Regis Bora Bora: Which was better?

Fair warning: this post is going to be long. After spending the past week in Bora-Bora, I can unequivocally say that it was the most stunningly beautiful place I have seen in my travels to ~60 different countries (so much so that I’ll have a separate post that is much less content-heavy and mostly full of pictures of some of the scenic beauty you can expect here). Everyone looks for something different out of their…

Marriott travel packages in a Peak world: good value?

When Marriott merged with SPG in August 2018, they massively increased the prices for travel packages.  Travel packages offer a way to spend a big chunk of Marriott Bonvoy points in exchange for two things: a bunch of airline miles of your choice plus a 7 night stay certificate.  The total cost in points depends upon the hotel category stay certificate you want and whether you want 50,000 or 100,000 airline miles. When the post-merger…

Marriott Cash + Points Revised. Good deal?

This morning Marriott announced several changes to Marriott Bonvoy awards (details here).  One of the changes is that they revised Points + Cash pricing for peak and off-peak awards.  I wasn’t too excited about the original plan, but how about now?  Did Marriott redeem Cash + Points?  (see what I did there?) The chart, above, shows the regular award prices (Points Only) and the Cash + Points prices.  The Cash + Points rates are the…
