50K business class to Europe on Delta (Jun-Aug, easy cancellation)

Virgin Atlantic is showing excellent availability for business class on Delta flights to Europe. I am not sure whether we’ll see a return to normalcy by June-July-August, but booking these is low-risk since we know that Virgin Atlantic doesn’t charge cancellation fees when the taxes are under $50 (as they would be on a flight from the US to Europe) or has reasonable cancellation fees when the taxes are higher (as they would be leaving Europe).…

SeatSpy is an awesome tool for finding award space on British Airways and Virgin Atlantic flights.  Inside Flyer published details about this tool back in November 2019, but I didn’t get around to checking this out until recently. Input any British Airways or Virgin Atlantic route and SeatSpy will instantly show you award availability for a full year.  And if you don’t find what you need, you can easily setup email alerts. Best of all,…

Necker vs North Island Luxury

Richard Branson

Richard Branson’s Necker Island used to sit alone as the most aspirational destination achievable with frequent flyer points. But now there’s a new contender: North Island, a Luxury Collection Resort, Seychelles.  At first glance, Necker and North Island have a lot in common. Each is an all-inclusive, super exclusive, and crazy expensive resort destination on a small private island.  These are places where you’re likely to find the rich and famous.  Sir Richard Branson lives…

Buy points for less: When does it make sense to jump on a deal?

There are times when buying points or miles can make a lot of sense.  If you know what you’re doing, it’s often possible to save a lot of money or get a much better experience.  For example, you may be able to spend $50 on points to book a hotel that would have cost you over $100 if you booked the hotel for cash.  Or, maybe you were planning to pay $2,000 for an international…

Virgin Atlantic: no cancellation fee on cheap awards

One of my favorite things about booking award tickets with foreign programs is that foreign programs often have much more reasonable change and cancellation fees than major domestic carriers in the United States. That’s true even when booking award tickets for travel on partner airlines. Virgin Atlantic publishes a cancellation fee of $50 per passenger, which is what I paid (for three passengers) to cancel and redeposit an award itinerary in August. In September, I…
