Comments

      • Hey, um, well that I dont think is correct…. I opened a CSR in November, booked a cruise to use the $300 Travel Credit… They let me use the 2017 travel credit since my statement for December ended January 2nd… I loaded up EZ-Pass for $300 and got that reimbursed as well. Did the spend for 100,000 points. I then sent an SM to ask to downgrade to a my second freedom (5x categories). I asked about downgrading to the Sapphire, Freedom Unlimited, and the Freedom which they all told me I could do. Another thing to note is they told me that downgrading to a no annual fee card within 60 days, I would get my FULL $450 back!!! Essentially made $1600+ and got a 2nd Freedom. Chase is SWEET!

  1. Added Blue Cash Everyday $100 + 10% at Amazon up to $200 extra offer and Blue Cash Preferred $150 + 10% at Amazon up to $200 extra offer.

  2. TLDR; Long time user of Amex Platinum (both personal & biz) … tired/fed-up of Amex BS/Wag-the-dog … loving Chase’s Reserve and InkPlus (see tremendous value beyond the first year and will keep both) … fingers-crossed for the Chase Ink RESERVE!!!

    1. Amex Platinum has been systematically whittling down the benefits with nuanced terms, e.g., the $200 airline credit limited to1 airline and that too does NOT cover common expenses on that 1 airline! Chase’s Reserve $300 & Citi’s Prestige $250 out class hands down.

    2. Amex does NOT seem to understand that its card is not accepted as it used to be both within US and definitely overseas. Plus Amex does NOT seem to realize that Costco was the tipping point – and their network does NOT even begin to compare with Visa & Master network inside US and worldwide!

    3. Instead of taking the message from Costo & CSR & Citi Prestige, they continue onwards like IBM did in the 80’s … anyone remember the original IBM PC – exactly! Think of it as Chase = HP in 2016 (see the creativity), Citi = Dell (comeback kid).

    4. While Amex focuses on advertising, trickling enhancements, and plays wag-the-dog …
    >> Chase Sapphire Reserve gives the value to its consumers and has already outclassed Amex Platinum personal
    >> Chase Ink Plus (Preferred) already bests Amex Gold
    >> Chase Ink Reserve for Business [fingers crossed] with say a 6X category + some other benefits would easily knockout Amex Platinum Business OPEN!

    5. We would not need to look beyond Chase … especially since its UR is family-friendly (transfers) and they don’t nickel-n-dime their customers, e.g., transferring miles to domestic airlines (unlike Amex)

But to be fair the one-up that Amex has is its Centurion lounges -BUT- Chase can add more than Priority Pass Select lounges to make a point … (hint hint for Ink Reserve)

  3. Question: I have had the United Explorer card for 2 years. Is there any reason to pay $95 and keep it? I don’t think I need any of the normal benefits mentioned above, but what about award availability? I thought one gets a better selection of awards seats (or is this only for “standard awards” i.e. the ones at double the price)?

  4. Added Blue for Business 10K points after first purchase + 10X points at U.S. restaurants the first six months (up to $2K in spend) + 2X on all purchases the first year (up to $50K in spend) offer.

  5. Greg, if i open a Chase card for a business that has no cards yet, but I have other personal and business cards such that the 5/24 rule would apply, would that keep me from getting cards for my new business?

    Thanks.

  6. Shouldn’t the Chase Sapphire Reserve entry have the verbiage “Note: This card is known to be subject to Chase’s 5/24 rule.”? Also, per multiple other points sites, the Chase Marriott BUSINESS card is apparently NOT subject to 5/24, but you indicate that it is above. Is that accurate?

    • Hi Tom. You are correct that the Sapphire Reserve should be a part of 5/24 and I have added that language. That was an oversight.

As for the Marriott Business card, there are mixed data points now regarding that card. Recently there are people who have been denied for having too many new accounts, but others have been approved. I have updated the language to indicated it may be a part of 5/24 but the data is mixed.

      Thanks!

  7. The TD Cash Visa now only offers $100 bonus for spending $500 in the 1st 90 days. The $200 offer for spending $1500 has expired.

  8. The 50,000 mile bonus has expired for the Chase Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card. The landing page shows the offer, but when you click the Apply button, tou end up on a page that says offer no longer available.

    • Thanks. It appears that app has died. The best offer now appears to be 40K after $1K spend. The 50K app on the lower annual fee Plus card still seems to be working as does the Premier Business 50K app.

  9. I called Priority Pass directly and confirmed that the separate Select passes I received from my Chase Sapphire Reserve, Citi Prestige and CNB Crystal all include free lounge entry for the passholder and ALL guests (not just two). My Amex Platinum and Amex Mercedes-Benz Platinum include free entry for the cardholder only with guests costing $27 each. Finally, the Priority Pass from my Amex Hilton HHnonors Surpass card requires a $27 payment per person, even including the passholder. Your descriptions above differ from that – you do not even list in for the Amex cards, so you may want to confirm yourself and update as needed.

    • Hi Tom,

We don’t list the Priority Pass specifically for the Amex cards since it is part of lounge access options such as the Centurion lounges and Delta SkyClubs. This is just quick basic information and going through to the app will give the full details. Lounge membership is listed as a benefit.

As for the Citi Prestige, I understand what you have been told, but many people I know including myself only received a Priority Pass membership with 2 guests or immediate family.

The Priority Pass benefit with the Surpass is not listed since it isn’t a significant benefit given the cost.

The CNB Crystal card does include unlimited guests. The language above indicates that the primary cardholders and an authorized user get access for a total of 2 cards.

      Thanks as always.

      • I have since visited Priority lounges with my Crystal card and my Citibank Prestige card and each time, they let me in with my wife and two children w/o charges, which is what the Priority Pass customer service said was provided by the card, so I have to differ with your assessment above.

        • Tom, I don’t think that differs from what Shawn wrote. You were allowed in with immediate family. That is consistent with what Shawn said. Anyway, my recommendation is to always use the Crystal card’s Priority Pass (or Sapphire Reserve’s) since that definitely allows unlimited guests (unless the lounge has specific policies against it).

  10. The are three HSBC credit cards described at https://www.us.hsbc.com/1/2/home/personal-banking/credit-cards. Premier has a 40,000 point sign-up bonus which is worth $600 towards airfare, but requires a Premier HSBC bank account ($100,000 total balance) to qualify. Advance has a 25,000 point sign-up bonus which can be redeemed for $250 in cash, but requires an Advance HSBC bank account ($10,000 total balance or $5,000 total balance plus any monthly direct deposit) to qualify. Platinum Rewards 15,000 sign-up bonus can be redeemed for $150 in cash, and has no listed HSBC bank account requirements. All three waive the annual fee in the 1st year. If the corresponding HSBC bank account balances are not maintained, fees are $95 for Premier, $45 for Advance and $0 for Platinum Rewards in years 2+.

  11. Hey Shawn,

Would you ever recommend doing a balance transfer on a card with high balances to a card with a zero introductory balance transfer? I’ve seen cards that offer zero balance transfer for “x” months but all of them charge anywhere from 3% to 5% in balance fees. What are your thoughts.

  12. Can you confirm for me that I can get the 100,000 bonus on the AMEX Business Platinum for a second business I have even though I still have the same card for my first business? I also have the personal Platinum.

  13. For some reason I’m having a really difficult time finding info on the upromise card.

I buy a ton of apple products online, and I’m trying to figure out if upromise credit card will give me 5% back if I have the card and go through the portal. Apple is on the list of retailers at 1%. Does this mean I earn 5% as well as 1%, or is apple limited to 1% total and that’s all I’d earn between the portal and the card.

    https://shop.upromise.com/e/members/benefits.php?sid=132XXdKrlo132&xgroupby=partname

    • I don’t have that card, but yes I believe that any transactions that pay out through the uPromise portal will also get 5% cash back if you pay with the uPromise credit card. So with your Apple example, you should get 1% from the portal + 5% from the credit card = 6% cash back.

    • Here’s the details from the Upromise site:

Earn 1% cash back shopping through the portal

Earn an additional 5% cash back for college when you use the Upromise MasterCard® only on eligible online purchases.

The new MacBook Pro and Apple AirPods are not eligible for cash back. Additional products not eligible for cash back are gift cards, gift wrap, One to One Membership, Bose products, and shipping. Apple sells and ships products to end user customers only; you may not purchase for resale. Eligible only to a customer for up to five (5) units per eligible product, except iPhone, in which case only two (2) units within a thirty-day (30-day) period are eligible.

  14. Looks like the AMEX Hilton offer is gone too – gives me a page with privacy information when clicking on it – both regular and in incognito window.

  15. While at it – it looks like the BOA Virgin Atlantic card has been replaced with two other cards a Black card with a 20K offer and a White card with a 12.5K offer. Annual fees $90 and $49 respectively though.

  16. Added Barclaycard Aviator Red AAdvantage Mastercard 40K offer. Note: This card can only be applied for in an airport or on board a flight.

  17. Is anyone else having issues with the Bank of America application status web page? It says that it has no matching info for me and my wife. However, it was working a couple of weeks ago, and we each have had a couple of cards approved (Amtrak and Alaska Business) and one declined (Merrill+) within 1 month. I was able to see those applications until my most recent one was approved. Status for my wife was not available a few days before mine stopped working. Very odd.

  18. Is it just me or has Barclay become a MUCH less attractive card? First they changed the threshold for redeeming miles at full value from 2,500 to 10,000. That was annoying but no more. however now I notice that they systemically fail to code travel expenses as such. If an expense is not coded as a travel expense it it not possible to get a full-value credit for it. Attempts to contact customer service fall on deaf ears.

  19. Is it not possible to recon BofA Biz cards? Applied and was denied immediately. So called the # 800 481 8277 – Option 3, but told – cant provide update for ind applications and we will contact if any info needed/ will send the decision in writing.

Anyway to recon without hearing from them?

      • ty! for checking on this!

I figured this out.. one update to my above question… option 3 leads you to robo voice and not to live rep…

So i called the same number again and this time selected option 1 – apply for a new application. Sent to live rep and explained my case.. instead of saying declined, i mentioned declined pending further info.

So transferred to credit dept and successfully recon’ed and approved for 5K CL. All in all, ended positive!

  20. Fixed Fairmont 2 Free Nights offer.

WARNING: The Fairmont offer is very likely to die at any moment since all traces of the landing page are gone. If you’re interested in this excellent offer, I’d recommend signing up today. More here: https://www.uscreditcardguide.com/chase-fairmont-credit-card/

I’m not trying to twist anyone’s arm here. This is NOT an affiliate link — I do not get anything from people signing up for this card. It’s just a great offer that is very likely to disappear at any moment.

    • Missed it by that much. I was waiting for Chase to close out card #5 before applying. Thanks for the heads up though.

Hopefully some other readers got in more quickly.

  21. My wife and I each have one and all the perks they give you annually are pretty suite! Food credits, room upgrades, suite upgrades, 3rd night free plus an annual free night for 12k spend. Their programs management is highly inefficient so be prepared.

  22. I received a mailer from Capital One for the Capital One QuickSilver. Earn a $150 one-time cash bonus when you spend $500 on purchases in 3 months.

  23. Can you get the CitiBusiness AAdvantage World MasterCard if you don’t have a business? Also, the Citi Platinum Select links are both broken.

    • You should have a business to open a business credit card. That said, not all businesses are huge corporations. Some are as simple as a person who buys and sells things on eBay or Craigslist now and then. The important thing is to be honest in your application.

And thank you for noting that the links were broken. They’re fixed now. I appreciate the heads up!

  24. Does the 50% Airline Bonus for the AMEX Business Platinum card apply to economy international tickets purchased through, for example, my designated airline of American Airlines, for flights on non-American metal such as British Airways? My home airport is BOS and I fly often to Europe. I’m trying to decide on the best choice for my AMEX designated airline. I only occasionally travel in any premium class. Do you have any suggestions?

  25. Fixed the link for the Case Ritz-Carlton Visa to include an active offer without a landing page that should yield 3 free nights. Also updated the Citi Thank You Preferred offer yesterday to include a link for a 15,000 ThankYou Point sign-up offer that does not include the 24-month language.

  26. Your link for the Chase Ritz-Carlton card with 3 night bonus offer appears to be dead. The page now simply displays: “Offer Unavailable. The information you requested is no longer available.”

  27. The link for the AmTrak 15,000 point bonus seems to be dead. It brings you to a page that says “System Unavailable We’re sorry for any inconvenience, but the system is currently down. Please try again later.”

  28. After trying the link in various browsers and incognito/private windows it appears that the Citi Prestige offer is now only showing 40K TYP after $4K spend.

  29. Any updates on whether the Avianca lifemiles offer actually works? I had heard a few weeks ago that people were not necessary getting their 60k miles. Didnt want to drop the $149 annual fee if so.

Also does the Citi AA 50K offer ** really** work even if you’ve had a Citi AA card within the last 24 months? I am 12 months out from closing my last AA card and would love to use that link.

  30. I can confirm that both my wife and I received our 60,000 Avianca miles last week, and we also each earned 60,000 AA miles from our second city cards a couple weeks

  31. Just applied today for 4 AMEX CC’s for new business, about 2 years old. Approved for all 4, one charge and 3 credit. Thanks, Greg for all of your help. I have relied on your advice for years and it has always been spot on!

    Marshall

      • Greg, on two of the cards I was required to call by Amex after I completed the app. Both calls were easy, just Amex rep telling me I was a valued customer and when I would get the cards. Approved immediately on the spg card and the gold card, called on the blue and delta gold.

        Marshall

    • Oops! Thanks Rachel. Someone put the “N” in the wrong column of our credit card database. It was supposed to hide the card altogether from this page because we don’t know any good public signup offers for that card right now. It is now fixed.

  32. Greg,

I was just forwarding your link for the Schwab Amex Platinum to a friend of mine and noticed that your perks include one free AU. I haven’t seen that anywhere, and in a chat with AMEX they said it is the normal up to 3 for $175 deal.

Can you offer me any insight into how to get that first AU free?

    Anita

    • Was just searching for confirmation of the same thing… couldn’t find anything regarding AUs at all on the application as far as whether any were free or even if they were $175.

  33. March 1, 2017: Today I received AMEX Blue Cash Preferred $250 statement credit after $1000 spend via Firefox private/incognito. Applied and approved immediately. So the $250 credit (without the 10% restaurant category) IS still possible.

  34. Thanks for the clear listings on this page. Just applied for 5 cards (the Citi Business special was not from your links) for spouse last night, 2 instant approval, let’s see where the others go.

    • I just called into Merrill’s credit card application line at 866-751-1257, and the rep confirmed that the 50,000 point bonus is still available for new phone applications. I did not submit anything since I want to call on a weekday when the reconsideration line will be open.

  35. Hi Nick. I just put $48,000 on my Amex business at 1.5x’s the normal points. Any way you can see a way to double dip? Or if not, is there a better option for a card to transfer balance to? Just made purchase yesterday. Thanks for your thoughts.

    • I’m sorry I never responded Alfred — somehow your message slipped past me. I’m not sure what you meant about double dipping. As I understand it, you charged $48,000 to your card. Now you have to pay it off. The nice thing is that you earned 72,000 Membership Rewards points. That’s a nice haul.

If you still have a question, let me know and I’ll do the best I can to answer it. I’ll keep my eye out — sorry again for the slow response.

  36. It appears that the link for the Hilton Reserve card is dead. When I click the Apply button under the Reserve card column on the landing page to which your link directs me, the resulting page says “A system error has caused a delay in processing your application.”

  37. Amex recently (expired end of January 2017) had an offer for the Delta Gold card for 75k after $3k in spend. Got the offer via mail.

  38. Updated the Ritz-Carlton card as all working links to a 3-night sign up bonus are now dead. Current sign up bonus of 2 free nights on $4K spend has been updated.

Also updated the Korean Skypass Business visa for 15K signup bonus (previous bonus was 10K).

Edited to include sign up bonus information on Barclaycard Aviator and updated it as the application is online (was previously in the airport only).

  39. Chase Freedom Unlimited has a targeted in-branch offer for 30k after $500 spend, plus the 2.5k for authorized user. Just got it today.

  40. Hi,

Does anyone have a link for the Hilton Reserve Card that has the $100 Statement credit. I have searched everywhere and I can’t seem to find it.

    Thank you

  41. I have just been offered 10,000 MR points on my personal Amex Platinum card if I enroll in their Extended Pay Option. It doesn’t say, but I am guessing this will involve a credit inquiry. I don’t care about the extended pay option itself, just wondering if this is a free 10,000 points as they say or their is the cost of a credit pull.

What do you think? I don’t think 10,000 MR points is worth a hard pull.

    • I’ve never received a credit pull with these.
Whenever I apply for an Amex MR charge card, I wait to get an offer like that and then sign up. Free and easy 5K to 10K points as long as you continue to pay in full each month (otherwise you pay interest).

      • Great, thanks. I’ll do it. I’m still trying to claw back the 100 MR they clawed back from me last August. This would make 60K so far ….

  42. Greg:

My wife just got the Amex Hilton Surpass card. Unfortunately, she got it before the increased signup bonus to 100k plus free night. Does Amex give additional 20K signup bonuses in situations like this? Thanks.

    • Amex won’t officially match the new bonus but people have had luck with the following process:
      1. Call to say that you’re unhappy that you got a lower bonus than the current bonus. Ask if they’ll match it. They’ll probably offer you a very small number of courtesy points instead.
      2. Ask to speak to a supervisor
      3. Supervisor will hopefully offer the full 20K points as a courtesy, or at least more than the first line person did.

    • Thanks for commenting. Our link was working when I added it on 3/16, but it seems that all links without 24-month language have died for the moment.

However, I have updated it with a new link for 50,000 points after $3,000 in purchases. This link DOES have 24-month language, so you will NOT be eligible for the bonus if you have opened or closed it in the past 24 months.

Thanks again for bringing it to my attention!

  43. Is the Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard 50k offer no longer available? The link just goes to another page on this site. And that page just has a link to creditcards.com which only shows 30k miles after $1000 in purchases.

    • Thank you for commenting! I’ve fixed the link — it now takes you to a 50k offer. Note that this offer includes 24 month language — you will not be eligible if you have opened or closed a Citi AAdvantage card in the past 24 months. Thanks again, Eric!

  44. I think you need to update the annual fee on all Amex Platinum personal cards to $550 as of today. Also, the Charles Schwab Platinum now has a 60,000 point bonus, more than offsetting the increased fee.

    • Thanks, Tom. We’ve made updates on the Charles Schwab, Mercedes-Benz, and Morgan Stanley sign up bonuses (all 60k now) as well as the benefits of those cards and the Ameriprise version to reflect new 5X categories and free Gold card AUs.

  45. Perhaps you can help with a problem:
I applied for an Avianca card through your site on February 6, 2017. Everything went through perfectly, the first statement came and though the statement mentions nothing about the miles, the 60,000+ miles did land in my Lifemiles account immediately.

Then my wife applied also through your site on March but by mistake she put her LifeMiles User ID as the Lifemiles number on the Bank’s application page – the application rejected this as an invalid LifeMiles number and so she blanked it out and applied as thorgh she didn’t have a LifeMiles account and one would be assigned to her.

When her first statement came we checked – and no miles posted. Called the Banco Popular who said the miles were going to the number she had initially tried to use (the user ID) and that we had to call LifeMiules as thet are the only ones who can fix this.

Called LifeMiles (right now I am on the 5th such call). On Tuesday we were promised (by a Sylvia Ruiz) that it would be fixed in 24 to 48 hours by a manager as she was not authorized to do it. Now, 3 days later nobody knows Sylvia, and we are back at square one. They at Lifemiles are saying that the miles are being posted to the correct account (quoting the user ID) as the number. When I explain that there is a completely different number for Lifemiles … get put on hold again. It’s now been 40 minutes, constantly being interrupted to enter the PIN number to continue … Nightmare.

Have you anyone I can contact to get this resolved? The high $149 annual fee has now been posted and no miles. They are saying we should wait but that is just nonsense as my miles posted as soon as the statement was generated. I don’t want to have to cancel the card with no miles earned …

    .

    • Hi Frank. Sorry to hear about this mess! Unfortunately, we don’t have any relationship with Avianca or with Banco Popular, so I can’t think of any way to help. Best bet is to keep calling and ask for supervisors when the front line people can’t help.

      • Thanks for the reply. It has been a nightmare of calls and emails, but it seems they have finally linked the bank with LifeMiles correctly. No miles posted yet but I paid the fee, trusting that the bonus will come one day … 🙂

I will confirm when it does post. Hopefully we will get good use out of these miles too.

        • Still struggling with BPOP and Avianca who cannot seem to get my wife’s miles to post …

12 phone calls, as many emails ….
          grrrr

    • Hi Rick — thanks for commenting. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a working link for the 45K offer. I have updated to include both existing versions of the Wyndham card. The annual fee version comes with a 30K sign up bonus (15K after first purchase and 15K after meeting spend) and the no-annual-fee version comes with 15K after first purchase as of this writing. The links above should both take you to a page where you select either the annual fee version on the left of the no-fee version on the right.

  46. About the 100K BA offer from Chase: Any idea how long these offers hang around for? I have a few too many inquiries with Chase (and others) recently – 1 Chase and 3 from other banks since Jan 1st. But I am going away for a month or so at the end of April.

What do you think? I can give up a Chase Marriott (although just paid the annual fee last week) and a couple of Chase bus cards …

I’d love to have this for my European trip coming up.

    • Went ahead and applied – decided to NOT call in for a change and was approved after 3 days (see it right now on my online account) though no word yet from Chase.

      Thanks

  47. The link for the Wells Fargo Propel card is broken. The text says only available in branch, but I can see the application page on the Wells Fargo credit cards page (https://www.wellsfargo.com/credit-cards/propel). Unfortunately, it now has no new account bonus, but at least it also has a $0 annual fee. However, comments on DoC indicate you can still get 40,000 points if it is opened in branch or over the phone.

    • Thanks, Tom. I fixed that link to point to the DoC info on applying by phone. Be sure to check the most recent comments for updates — but that looks like the way to go for now since there is no sign up bonus online.

    • I think this is the reason:
“This application is available via phone and we recommend applying that way. To apply, call 866-751-1257 and use application code BAABZX. Click here for the disclosure agreement showing 50,000 bonus points in fine print.”

  48. Hilton allows a couple to share the same honors account. I wonder: could my wife and I each sign up for the Amex surpass card and earn 100,000 points into the same account? Anybody tried?

  49. FYI, just applied by phone for Merrill + card. After I gave her to application code of BAABZK she was asking if the person who referred me was an employee and for a code of some sort. I hemmed and hawed and got around it, but I wanted to make others aware just in case anyone else tries to apply. Apparently that code is used for Merrill employees to refer others for this card.

  50. New data point. I applied for another alaska card and was denied. (Good credit and income etc etc)
Called recon line and answered all questions. Still denied. Asked to move credit. No deal (they just don’t want to give me any more cards). I have opened 2 AS cards (and closed one) and the ML card in the past year. Like many others, I have been closing my AS card and reapplying yearly instead of paying another annual fee.

  51. Me and my wife received Amex PRG Card offer of 50,000 points after spending $2000 in 3 months. It was listed in Amex Offers list. I applied and was approved. Can me and my exchange membership rewards points between us?

    • No, unlike Chase, Amex doesn’t allow sharing or moving Membership Rewards points. That said, if you plan to transfer points to an airline program you can transfer both sets of points to a single program. The only requirement is that one of you would have to be an authorized user on the other’s account.

  52. It would be great if you could the URLs and/or phone numbers for the status and reconsideration contacts for the cards from Banco Popular, BBVA Compass, City National, FNBO, HSBC and TD.

      • Those banks might be the only ones on my next round of applications due to the ever tightening bonus and/or number of cards restrictions from Amex, BofA, Citi, Chase, Discover and Wells Fargo. I will let you know what I learn. Unfortunately, there are not many churnable cards left for me to get. The good news is that I’ve earned quite a bit to date.

  53. Many offers updated:

Southwest personal 50K offers have expired. Best offer is now 40K on each card.

Wells Fargo cards increased signup bonuses from 15K to 20K.

TD Bank Cash rewards increased from $100 to $150 sign up bonus.

Virgin Atlantic 90K links have all expired. Replaced with current best offer of 25K (+ 15K for big spend)

Citi Hilton 75K offer expired. Replaced with 60K offer (best currently available). Also added a 40K link with no 24-mo language).

    Updated Blue Cash cards details

Fixed several links that had not expired but needed to be fixed.

Removed Virgin America card as it is no longer being offered.
