Overview

The Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card is a great choice for those who fly Delta domestically with a companion at least once per year (thanks to its annual companion certificate), and for big spenders who seek Delta elite status. For the later, the Platinum card offers 10,000 MQMs (Medallion Qualifying Miles) and 10,000 bonus miles after $25,000 in calendar year spend, and again at $50,000 spend.

At $195 per year, the card isn't cheap, but it does offer priority boarding, free checked bags, and an annual economy companion certificate each year upon renewal. Unfortunately, this certificate can only be used for domestic economy tickets. Still, the companion certificate alone can make the Platinum card worth keeping.

Those seeking even more MQMs through spend, and/or better perks such as SkyClub access and first class companion certificates should consider the Delta Reserve card instead.

The personal version of this card is almost identical, but the business card has a big advantage: Amex business cards are not shown as accounts on personal credit reports. This is particularly helpful when signing up for Chase credit cards (since Chase frequently denies applications for those who have signed up for 5 or more cards in the past 24 months). This can also help your credit score if you spend a lot on this card since those charges will not hurt your credit utilization ratio (a major component of your credit score).

Applying for Business Credit Cards

Yes, you have a business: In order to sign up for a business credit card, you must have a business. That said, it's common for people to have businesses without realizing it. If you sell items at a yard sale, or on eBay, for example, then you have a business. Similar examples include: consulting, writing (e.g. blog authorship, planning your first novel, etc.), handyman services, owning rental property, renting on airbnb, driving for Uber or Lyft, etc. In any of these cases, your business is considered a Sole Proprietorship unless you form a corporation of some sort.

When you apply for a business credit card as a sole proprietor, you can use your own name as your business name, use your own address and phone as the business' address and phone, and your social security number as the business' Tax ID / EIN. Alternatively, you can get a proper Tax ID / EIN from the IRS for free, in about a minute, through this website.

Is it OK to use business cards for personal expenses? Legally, it's fine. And, anecdotally, almost everyone I know uses business cards for personal expenses. That said, the terms in most business card applications state that you should use the card only for business use. Also, some consumer credit card protections do not apply to business cards. My advice: don't use the card for personal expenses if you're not comfortable doing so.

Application Tips

Amex Application Tips

  • Safe to Apply: Amex is the safest bank for trying your luck at a new welcome bonus. They don’t usually issue a hard pull when denying your application. Plus, they’ll now warn you during the application process if you’re not eligible for the bonus.

  • Lifetime Rule: If you've ever had the same card before, you are most likely prohibited from getting a welcome bonus for the card if you sign up now. Fortunately you'll be warned during the application process if this is the case. Amex is known to "forget" that you've had a card after about 7 years.

  • 5/90 Rule: In general, you can get at most one credit card within 5 days and 2 within 90 days. The 5 day limit is not enforced when your applications are automatically approved. Neither rule is enforced for charge cards.

  • 5 credit card max:Amex usually won't approve applications for new credit cards if you already have 5 or more Amex credit cards open. This limit does not apply to charge cards.

  • Better Offers: You may be able to get a better offer than the best available public offer. Details here.

How to Meet Spend Requirements

In order to meet minimum spend requirements, people often look for options to increase spend in ways that result in getting the money back. These techniques are often referred to as "manufacturing spend". American Express has terms in their signup offers that exclude some manufactured spend techniques from counting towards the minimum spend requirements for the welcome bonus. For example, most signup bonuses have terms like this:
Eligible purchases to meet the Threshold Amount of this offer do NOT include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchase of travelers checks, purchase or reloading of prepaid cards, purchases of gift cards, person-to-person payments, or other cash equivalents.
That said, many techniques for meeting minimum spend are perfectly fine. Here are some techniques that are safe for meeting Amex minimum spend requirements (click each link for more information):

Overview

The Gold DeltaSkyMiles Business Credit Card from American Express often has a compelling signup bonus, but past the first year I don't recommend this card for most people.

After the first year those who fly Delta often will probably get more value from the Delta Platinum or Reserve card. If you do not fly Delta often, consider cards with points transferable to airlines, or those in which points can be used to pay for travel (e.g. Barclays Arrival Plus, Capital One Venture, etc.), or even cash back cards (Citi Double Cash, Discover It Miles, etc.).

  • Hard inquiries combine into 1 when approved same day

The Blue Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express is the only Delta card with no annual fee. It is also the only Delta card that offers 2 miles per dollar at restaurants. Rewards

Amex Membership Rewards points can be incredibly valuable if you know how to use them. In general, if you use Membership Rewards points to pay for merchandise or travel, you won't get good value from your points. One exception is with the Business Platinum card where you'll get a 35% point rebate when using points to book certain flights. This gives you approximately 1.5 cents per point value, which is pretty good. If you don't have the Business Platinum card, then your best bet is to transfer points to airline miles in order to book high value awards. More details can be found here: Amex Transfer Partners.

Overview

The Business Platinum Card from American Express is part of American Express' line of high-end Platinum cards. As such, it shares a number of valuable benefits with other Amex Platinum cards:

  • Up to $200 a year in statement credits for airline incidental fees
  • $100 Global Entry fee reimbursement.
  • Airport lounge benefits: Priority Pass Select membership, plus free access to Delta SkyClubs, Amex Centurion Lounges, and Airspace Lounges
  • Rental car elite status. National Executive status is particularly valuable in my opinion.
  • SPG Gold status.
  • Hilton Gold status. Free breakfast.
  • Free Boingo wifi.

The Business Platinum card also has a few unique perks and traits not shared with personal Platinum cards:

  • 35% Airline Bonus: Get 35% of your points back when you redeem points through Amex Travel for either a First or Business class flight on any airline, or for any flights with your selected airline.
  • Gogo inflight internet: 10 complimentary single flight segment passes for Gogo inflight internet each calendar year (these work on international flights too!
  • 1.5X points per dollar on purchases of $5000 or more
  • Amex business cards are not shown as accounts on personal credit reports. This is particularly helpful when signing up for Chase credit cards (since Chase frequently denies applications for those who have signed up for 5 or more cards in the past 24 months).

Unlike personal Platinum cards, though, the Business Platinum card does not offer 5X rewards for airfare purchases made directly with an airline.

At $450 per year, the Business Platinum card is expensive, but if you value its many perks it can be well worth keeping.

Overview

The Platinum Card from American Express is a high end travel rewards charge card that is loaded with perks:

  • 5X points per dollar for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel.
  • 5X points per dollar for prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel
  • Up to $200 a year in statement credits for airline incidental fees
  • Up to $200 per year in annual rides with Uber ($15/month, $35 in December)
  • $100 Global Entry fee reimbursement.
  • Airport lounge benefits: Priority Pass Select membership, plus free access to Delta SkyClubs, Amex Centurion Lounges, and Airspace Lounges
  • Rental car elite status. National Executive status is particularly valuable in my opinion.
  • SPG Gold status
  • Hilton Gold status. Free breakfast.
  • Free Boingo wifi.

For many, the personal Platinum card's 5X airfare bonus and Uber credits may be enough to make this card worth keeping. For the rest of the benefits, though, some would do better with the Amex Business Platinum card which includes Gogo In-Flight Wifi, 35% points rebate when points are used to purchase select airfare, and 1.5 points per dollar for purchases of $5K or more.

  • Hard inquiries combine into 1 when approved same day

  • Hard inquiries combine into 1 when approved same day
